#5 Portugal

We have mentioned our love for Portugal in previous blogs, as it is one of the most cost effective travel destinations in Europe. Less expensive than Spain, Portugal shares a similar history of exploration and cultural exchange, which has created a diverse culture boasting Celtic influence in the North and Moorish influence seen in its music, language and architecture. The nation is home to many idyllic UNESCO villages and cities, including the Cultural Landscape of 19th Century Sintra and Historic Centre of Evora, along with the bustling major cities of Lisbon and Porto.

Spring and summer are the most popular seasons for tourists to visit, but the colorful festival of Carnival is widely celebrated throughout the country in early to mid-February (just before Lent) and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For cultural museums in Lisbon, we suggest a visit to the National Tile Museum, the National Museum of Costume and Fashion, or the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, all of which reflect the distinctive history of the country and its people. While travelling in Portugal, make sure to try signature dishes of Cozido a Portuguesa (a traditional stew), caldo verde (a cabbage soup), Bacalhau (dried and salted cod), and locally produced Port wines.
